International news this evening at the Netherlands Women’s National team crest has been updated and sees the lion replaced with a lioness.
Both Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam and the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) have joined forces and changed the crest as well as the team’s nickname to the Oranje Leeuwinnen (Orange Lionesses), giving the woman’s national team a separate identity to the men’s side.
Hannah Smit the art director at Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam said, “This is an idea that is so much bigger than just a campaign or logo update. It’s an idea that will endure and a strong statement that will help to continue to accelerate the growing momentum around women’s football. It’s a message that gives female players something of their own to rally behind.”
The new crest will debut at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2017 tournament’s opening fixture,
