One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson has won the Doncaster Rovers 2016-17 away kit design competition sparking a furious reaction from the clubs supporters who claim the vote was a fix.
The League One side announced that Thai based manufacturer FBT would be the clubs new kit supplier for the start of the 2016-17 season and gave fans the opportunity to design the clubs new away strip.
Entries were whittled down to five designs which then went to the public vote, and today it was announced local lad and Rovers fan One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson’s design had won with 33.7% of the votes, which has caused outrage on social media with fans claiming the vote was a ‘fix’.
Louis said “I designed the kit with my granddad when I was home a few weeks ago. We used to go to Belle Vue together so it has always been a family affair with us and to now have a hand in next seasons away shirt is brilliant. I can’t wait to see my team wearing it”.
The Doncaster Rovers fans have vented their anger and the decision which has led to the League One side making a club statement on the official website.
“The process for receiving kit designs, shortlisting and the public voting for our kit design competition followed strict legal guidance to ensure that the club adhered to competition law and that all processes were fair.
“We are aware that the result of the competition has attracted some mixed feedback, but we can assure our fans that the voting process for the 2016/17 shirt designs was all was fair and above board.”
The club will make no further comment at this time.
To add insult to injury Doncaster Rovers have announced that ’20 lucky people’ who pre-order the 2016-17 away shirt before 23:59pm on June 10th 2016 will be drawn at random to win one of twenty shirts personally signed by Louis!
