Michael Wood was the creator of the globe and ball Birmingham City crest after winning a competition to design the new club crest in the Sports Argus newspaper back in 1972.

In an interview with BluesTV Michael said, “My hobby is drawing and sketching. And I thought, being a keen Blues supporter, I’d like to do that.

“You start thinking about Birmingham, they did have some success in the early 60s in the Fairs Cup and I thought that would be really good if they were known a bit better globally.

“Football [is] the most popular game in the world, so the globe and football it was a very quick process of getting the design together. The name of the Club and the year that they were founded – it came quite naturally and quickly.”

Birmingham City have announced that Michael will be the club’s guest of honour when they face Blackburn Rovers on May 7th 2022.

To celebrate the landmark Birmingham City are encouraging supporters to get involved with ‘wear your badge day’, the final Sky Bet Championship game of the season, by wearing new and retro Birmingham City shirts that feature the crest in celebration of its 50th anniversary.
